Sarcoma Knows No Bounds! 

In March 1997 I took early retirement from Coventry University, after over 27 years of service. I started as a humble Lecturer and finished up as Head of Computing and Software Engineering. I am now an Independent Higher Education Consultant.

I was awarded an Honours Degree in Electrical Engineering by the University of London in 1967 after studying as an external student at Rugby College of Engineering Technology. My main subjects for the award were Mathematics, Electrical Power and Machines, Electrical Circuits and Electronics.

I began working for English Electric Leo Marconi Computers Ltd. in 1967. Based at Kidsgrove in Staffordshire I was one of a small team who wrote a FORTRAN compiler for a new range of industrial computers. In 1969 I moved into Higher Education as a lecturer in computer science, specialising in Software Engineering.

I became a Member of the British Computer Society in 1967 and was elected a Fellow in 1982. I have always been active in the Society, having been Branch Chairman for a number of years in the past. In 1990 I became a Chartered Engineer and, in 1994, was selected as a European Engineer (Eur Ing).

I have for many years been actively involved with the National Computing Centre (NCC) and with Ada UK. I am the author of a number of papers and a leading textbook on Programming Techniques and Practice.

For two years from 1993 I was seconded to the Higher Education Funding Council for England
(HEFCE) as a Reporting Assessor with the Quality Assessment Division. This has involved me in planning and conducting a large number of assessment visits to Universities in England.

For relaxation I actively pursue a number of hobbies, including singing, bell ringing, and real ale drinking. I am also an active member of the local Parish Church.
